Kahandamodara, Tangalle

Overview

Named after the flocks of peacocks (monaras) that strut across the land, this 10 acre retreat lies on the eastern bank of the Urubokka Oya. Open scrub land typical to the southern dry zone merges with river-side vegetation. We are gradually turning parts of the high ground back into a dry zone farm, whilst foresting other parts of the land.

Location

Located in Kahandamodara, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Back of Beyond Kahandamodara is around 20 minutes drive from Tangalle and around 2.5 hrs from the Kottawa interchange (Expressway).

The eco-retreat is situated in a 14-acre property of indigenous trees, lawns, marshes, and fruit and vegetable cultivation.

The property has over 300 m of river frontage, and is within 5 minutes drive/cycle ride, or 10 minutes walk/boat ride to the beach.

The property also consists of a farm with many varieties of organically grown fruits and vegetables.

Available services

Room

Consists of 4 units with a total of 9 rooms – a 4 bedroom Villa, two – 2 bedroom villas and a single bedroom cottage

Each Unit can be booked individually, or the entire place can be booked together for larger groups

Dining

At Monara Thanne our cook will prepare a wide variety of Sri Lankan as well as western dishes. The flavour of the southern coast predominates in the Sri Lankan food, and there is a distinct ‘Sri Lankan touch’ to the western dishes. In addition to vegetables and fruits, our home garden will give you a variety of fresh ‘green leaves’ that have now become all but inaccessible to the urban Sri Lankan. For those tempted to eat out on clear starry nights, we have prepared a barbeque space outside Siyambala.

We can also pack you a picnic lunch should you be spending the day exploring. The bungalow and cottage are offered on Bed and Breakfast, Half Board or Full Board basis.
