THE GATHERING OF ELEPHANTS AT MINNERIYA – SRI LANKA THROUGH A LEN
de Silva Wijeyeratne, G. (2005). The Gathering of Elephants at Minneriya – Sri Lanka Through a Lens. Synergy. November-December 2005. Pages 51-52. Volume 02, Issue 05.
“The Gathering’ of Elephants at Minneriya is one of the greatest eco-tourism spectacles in the world. Yet Sri Lanka has failed to make capital of it. Yet another example of a nation failing to fulfill the economic potential of its wildlife. For conservation to succeed in the long term, wildlife will have to pay its way.
‘The Gathering’ at Minneriya provides a wonderful opportunity to study the giants of our land. In the evening the herds gather around the lake. They splash mud, engage in mock jousts and show tender loving care to their young. To observe the social dynamics of this intelligent animal, ‘The Gathering’ provides a wonderful opportunity for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.
