Spend the morning at leisure enjoying the signature “Kashyapha and Uppula” spa treatment at The Island Spa. Afternoon visit Minneriya National Park for Elephants. During September and October, over 300 elephants gather on the receding shores of the Minneriya Tank. ‘The Gathering’ of Elephants at Minneriya is one of those awesome spectacles, which should rank alongside better-known wildlife spectacles such as the migration of wildebeest in Africa.
Morning visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is situated in the north central province belonging to the ‘Cultural Triangle’, in the dry lowlands of Sri Lanka. Climb the 5th century AD fortress palace built by King Kasyappa, but suspected to have been in use by Mahayana Buddhists for many centuries previously. The rock is an inselberg, which dominates the landscape and was both a military refuge as well as an aesthetic refuge for king who was a patron of the arts. The frescoes of the bare breasted heavenly maidens, which remain are a fragment of a band, which may have held over 500 figures. Afternoon visit Polonnaruwa (A UNESCO World Heritage Site), the medieval capital of Sri Lanka. At Polonnaruwa we will encounter troops of Toque Macaques, who were famously featured in both the BBC’s ‘Temple Troop’ and David Attenborough’s ‘Life of Mammals’. One will be intrigued by the power play between the Macaques and Hanuman Langur.
Transfer to Heritance Kandalama, Dambulla, for two nights. Heritance Kandalama was the Green Globe award winner and a masterpice of Geoffery Bawa and is hidden within the surrounding jungle. Walk with your naturalist on a birdwatching tour.
Morning visit Dambulla Cave Temple which is famous for its rock paintings and rock temples and is one of the most important sites for Buddhist pilgrimage. Afternoon explore architecture of the Hotel.
Transfer to The Blue Water, Wadduwa, for two nights. Walk down the cool white corridors, and be greeted by the spectacular sight of a lush green coconut palm garden. Get hypnotized by the soothing sounds of cascading ponds and fountains. Morning visit Dutch Fort. Afternoon balance and stimulate your body’s vital pressure points with an Ayurvedic aromatic herbal oil massage, the “Marma” at The Spa. Leave on an excursion to Kanneliya Rainforest, an excellent forest reserve of logged secondary forest and virgin forest. Transfer to Villa Talangama, Colombo for one night. Take a walk to the Talangama Wetland, which is home to a wide range of wetland fauna and flora. Over a hundred species of birds have been recorded.
