Arrive in Sri Lanka and transfer to Villa Talangama, Colombo for two nights. Afternoon, visit Talangama Wetland and surrounding paddy fields for an assortment of brilliant red Dragonflies such as Elusive Adjutant, Eastern Scarlet Darter and Spine-legged Redbolt and with luck two rare gomphids. Around the lake and canals we find many pond damselflies including endemic species of Gems, Sprites, and Threadtails. The list of species for the wetland is around 24 and growing. At Talangama one will encounter common species of beautiful butterflies, such as Tailed Jay, Common Crow, Common Palmfly, Common Rose, Common Sailor, Plain Tiger and Common Tiger.
Morning, visit Sheila’s garden, one of the largest private gardens in the Colombo suburbs. This private garden is rated among the best hundred gardens of the world.
After breakfast leave for Jetwing Vil Uyana, Sigiriya for three nights. The hotel, is the first in the world to construct a wetland system with lakes and a private nature reserve.
Morning, visit The “Popham Arboretum” which is located about 15 km from the Vil Uyana along the Kandalama road. This is one of the few arboretums we have in Sri Lanka. Here one can see more than 68 different species of dry zone trees in a 37-acre patch of forest.
Morning, visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The site divides into two sections. The rock itself, on whose summit Kassapa established his principal palace; and the area around the base of the rock, home to elaborate Royal pleasure gardens, as well as various monastic remains pre-dating Kassapa’s era. Afternoon, safari at Minneriya National Park. Over 300 elephants gather on the receding shores of the Minneriya Tank. ‘The Gathering’ of Elephants at Minneriya is one of those awesome spectacles, which should rank alongside better-known wildlife spectacles such as the migration of wildebeest in Africa.
Morning, visit Peradeniya Botanical Garden, the largest and finest garden in Sri Lanka, covering almost 150 acres and stuffed with a bewildering variety of local and foreign tree and plant species. The area around the entrance is largely given over to small- scale flora, including an orchid house, a spice garden and a tiny rather unimpressive Japanese Garden. Overnight at Hunas Falls by Amaya, Elkaduwa for three nights.
Day 7 & 8
Spend the morning at leisure. Afternoon, visit Hotel Herb Garden, The Farm and The Private Gardens of Hotel.
After breakfast leave for Jetwing St.Andrew’s, Nuwara Eliya for one night. Afternoon, walk in the hotel private garden.
Morning, visit Victoria Garden, afternoon, leave for Jetwing Warwick Gardens, Ambewala for two nights. Evening, visit Hakgala Botanical Garden. It is the second largest gardens in Sri Lanka situated in salubrious environment near the capital city of the hill country. It provides charm and cold atmosphere with picturesque beauty by its own landscape and many blooms seen in various sections in garden. It enhances natural beauty by small water steams run across the garden and wooden bridges built over them.
Morning, visit Horton Plains National Park to see Cloud Forests and rare Montane fauna, and also the endemic Rhino-horned Lizard, which was featured in Charles Darwin’s monumental work on evolution, Bear Monkey, Giant Squirrel and Sambar.Walk through the grasslands and Cloud Forests to the famous World’s end, which is an escapement with a 870 m drop. The cool, wet climate has fostered the growth of a distinctive range of flora, including various rhododendrons, bamboos, tree ferns and many endemic species of plant.
After breakfast leave for Cinnamon Bey, Beruwala for three nights.
Morning, visit Brief Garden, which was Geoffry Bawa’s holiday home. It is the most inventive, enchanting and influential garden in Sri Lanka. Primarily an artists garden it is a series of beautifully composed views and spaces created at different moods, and connected by colorful and circuitous woodland walks.
Leisurely day by the beach.
