Nocturnal Primates of Sri Lanka

The slender Loris is a small nocturnal primate found in Sri Lanka and South India. Recent taxonomic revisions recognize two species. One confined to Sri Lanka’s wet zone, Loris tardigradus, and one found on South India and Dry Lowland of Sri Lanka, Loris lydekkerianus.

1

Arrival in Sri Lanka and transfer to Tamarind Tree, Katunayake for two nights. Late afternoon, visit Dikkelle Forest Reserve (approximately 45 minutes drive) in search of Sri Lanka Endemic Red Slender Loris (Loris tardigraduse tardidradus).

Red Slender Loris is a distinct species, endemic to Sri Lanka. It is the smallest of the Sri Lankan taxa an average body size of 192 mm an average body weight of 140 g. It has a readdishdrowncoat and a relatively long muzzle and small ears

Breakfast, at the hotel.

Full day at leisure.

Late afternoon, another visit to Dikkelle Forest Reserve in search of Sri Lanka Endemic Red Slender Loris.

After breakfast, leave for Hotel Sigiriya (approximately 4 hours drive) for two nights.

Late Afternoon, visit Sigiriya Moat & surrounded area (approximately 15 minutes drive) in search of Gray Slender Loris (Loris lydekkerianus lydekkerianus).

Loris lydekkerianus lydekkerianus is found in north central part of Sri Lanka and is confined to the Dry Zone. Habitat type is dry forest and thorny scrub.

Morning, visit Sigiriya Moat & surrounded area again to observe the habitats of Gray Slender Loris during day time.

Afternoon, visit the Loris Conservation Center at Jetwing Vil Uyana (approximately 20 minutes drive) to get a brief Knowledge of Loris Conservation in Sri Lanka.

After Breakfast, leave for Rainforest Eco Lodge, Deniyaya (approximately 05 hours drive) for two nights.

Morning, visit Sinharaja Forest Reserve in search of Natural Habitats of Red Slender Loris which is found in Deniyaya area.

This Loris species is similar to Loris tardigraduse tardidradus in many aspects but outer appearance is different from Western Race. This species could probably be a sub speciec of Western Race of Loris tardigraduse tardidradus. Still the Genetic & Eco studies are continuing.

Late afternoon, visit the identified Territories in search of Red Slender Loris.
