Wildlife Talk by Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne

LONDON AND SRI LANKA: TWO WILDLIFE RICH DESTINATIONS

           FRIDAY 29TH JULY 2016, 6PM

Sri Lanka is richer for its wildlife than is generally realised. London, arguably the greatest capital city in the world, is also surprisingly rich for wildlife and has outstanding visitor infrastructure. This talk reiterates why Sri Lanka can claim to be one of the best all-round wildlife destinations in the world and also explains why London is one of the best capital cities in the world for wildlife. The talk will take a tour through the endemism rich biodiversity, whale watching and large terrestrial mammals found in Sri Lanka that make it is one of the best all-round wildlife destinations. There will also be a rapid tour through some of the outstanding nature reserves on the edges of London to illustrate the variety of wildlife for photographers. There are lessons to be learnt for Sri Lanka from London, and vice versa.

Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne has played a pivotal role in branding Sri Lanka for its wildlife. He has had over 15 books and over 330 articles published. In the words of British TV wildlife celebrity Bill Oddie no single individual has done so much to publicize a country for its wildlife. Gehan has broken the country’s biggest wildlife stories (some of international significance). He was the first to brand Sri Lanka for Leopard Safaris, the Elephant Gathering and led the publicity blitz for whale watching. He is presently the Chairman of the London Bird Club and is coordinating a series of posters and other media material to highlight London as a wildlife destination.
