Bill Oddie, one of Britain’s most celebrated wildlife personalities, is a man of many talents. Broadcaster, birdwatcher, actor, television presenter, writer, songwriter, musician, and above all, a passionate conservationist. Known internationally for acclaimed BBC programs such as Birding With Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie Goes Wild, and the much-loved Springwatch and Autumnwatch, he has long been a household name for those who cherish the natural world. His commitment to conservation extends beyond the screen, with active involvement in organizations including the RSPB, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, the Worldwide Fund for Nature, BirdLife International, and many more.
In July 2010, Bill Oddie embarked on a journey to Sri Lanka, accompanied by Liam Creedon, a travel writer with the UK’s Press Association. The visit was hosted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), initiated through their UK PR company Representation Plus, and expertly organized and run by Jetwing Eco Holidays. From the 23rd to the 28th of July, the duo explored the island’s remarkable biodiversity, guided by our naturalists who crafted an itinerary that blended birdwatching highlights with opportunities to encounter Sri Lanka’s broader spectrum of wildlife.
During their time on the island, Bill Oddie, often referred to as the UK’s most famous birder, was able to experience firsthand why Sri Lanka has become a premier destination for birding enthusiasts and naturalists alike. From lush wetlands teeming with migratory species to tropical forests alive with endemic birds, the journey offered the perfect setting for Oddie’s expertise and passion to shine. Complementing these avian encounters were unforgettable moments with elephants, primates, and other charismatic species that together tell the story of Sri Lanka’s natural wealth.
Jetwing Eco Holidays provided the end-to-end organization that made the visit seamless: from coordinating with national tourism bodies to ensuring expert guiding on the ground. Our role went beyond logistics, offering insights into local ecosystems and ensuring that both Bill Oddie and Liam Creedon gained a rich, authentic understanding of the island’s natural heritage.
