Faces of the Forest – 15 Days with Sri Lanka’s Wild Primates
Welcome to Sri Lanka! After being warmly received at the airport, journey into the capital city of Colombo. Once checked in, venture out to explore the city, where modern urban life meets colonial charm. One special stop is Viharamahadevi Park, home to roosting colonies of Flying Foxes. As dusk descends, you’ll witness hundreds of these large fruit bats take flight against the city skyline, an eerie and fascinating welcome to Sri Lanka’s wildlife.
Leave the bustling coast behind as you journey inland toward Wasgamuwa, one of Sri Lanka’s lesser-known yet deeply rewarding national parks. Nestled between riverine forests and mountainous terrain, the Far Cry resort is your base for primate exploration. Spend the evening enveloped in birdcalls and the soothing rhythm of nature, anticipating your first wild encounters tomorrow.
Set off at dawn and again in the afternoon for game drives through Wasgamuwa National Park, a sanctuary of thick forest and open plains. While this park is home to over 150 elephants, it also shelters a variety of primates including Toque Macaques, Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, and Gray Langurs. Keep your eyes peeled for Mugger Crocodiles sunning near waterholes, while the forest echoes with the whoops and chatters of primate troops.
Travel north to the iconic cultural triangle. After checking in to the eco-luxury dwellings of Jetwing Vil Uyana, head out to explore the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Once the pleasure palace of a 5th-century king, the rock citadel offers sweeping views and a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s glorious past. Look out for monkeys along the climb, especially the fearless Toque Macaques that have claimed the rock as their own.
Begin the day at the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, where stone temples now echo with the presence of wild primates. Observe the famous Temple Troop of Toque Macaques, documented in BBC and David Attenborough features. Later, head to Minneriya National Park, especially magical between August and October, when herds of over 300 elephants gather by the tank, for a wildlife spectacle known as The Gathering.
After breakfast, travel south to the hill capital, stopping at the magnificent Dambulla Cave Temple en route. This UNESCO-listed cave complex is home to ancient murals and over 150 Buddha statues carved into rock. Upon arrival in Kandy, check in to your riverside hotel and enjoy the evening breeze from your terrace as the sound of temple drums echoes through the city.
Embark on a full-day exploration into the remote Knuckles Wilderness Area. Your scenic drive winds through forested hills and misty mountain villages until you reach the open landscapes of Pitawala-Patana. Here, hike through sweeping grasslands and along escarpments offering breathtaking views. This region is a haven for highland wildlife, and you may encounter troops of Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys leaping between trees, or hear the echo of elusive birdlife in the distance.
Start your morning with a visit to the revered Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist sites. Afterward, drive toward the cooler climes of Nuwara Eliya, stopping en route at the Hakgala Botanical Gardens; a beautifully kept highland haven famed for its rose and orchid collections. Here, keep an eye out for the Purple-faced Leaf Monkey and abundantly confident Toque Macaque who are known to approach visitors. By evening, arrive in Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England,” where colonial architecture and misty gardens evoke a bygone era.
Rise early for an unforgettable morning in Horton Plains National Park, Sri Lanka’s highest plateau. Here, montane cloud forests give way to vast grasslands, where the crisp air is alive with the calls of endemic highland birds and the rustle of Leaf Monkeys in the trees. Walk the famed trail to World’s End, a sheer escarpment offering panoramic views that stretch all the way to the coast on a clear day. Along the way, look out for the endemic Bear Monkey, a montane subspecies of the Purple-faced Leaf Monkey, shrouded in mist and mystery. Return to Nuwara Eliya by mid-day for a relaxed afternoon.
Today’s journey takes you from the cool, tea-clad hills of Nuwara Eliya to the arid lowlands of Yala, a dramatic shift in scenery and climate. As you descend, watch the landscape transform from cloud forests to scrub jungle. Upon arrival, settle into your luxurious wilderness lodge at the edge of Yala National Park, home to the highest density of leopards in the world. In the evening, listen to the rustling bush and distant calls of peacocks and jackals under a star-filled sky. Settle into your eco-luxury hotel by the Indian Ocean, relax and unwind by the pool or sea-side dunes where the calls of peacocks and the rustle of wild boar may greet you before your first game drive tomorrow.
Set out at sunrise for a thrilling safari into Yala’s untamed terrain. Renowned for its elusive leopards, the park is also home to Sloth Bears, Crocodiles, Asian Elephants, and a dazzling array of birds. Amongst the thorny scrub and open forest, spot Gray Langurs and Toque Macaques navigating the branches in search of fruit and insects. With two game drives included, you’ll have ample opportunities to encounter some of Sri Lanka’s most charismatic wildlife in their natural habitat.
Depart Yala’s dry grasslands and travel southwest toward the emerald embrace of Sinharaja, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the last viable remnant of Sri Lanka’s primary rainforest. Check in to Rainforest Edge, perched on a hillside with sweeping views over the jungle canopy. This rich, tangled wilderness is a biodiversity hotspot, home to dozens of endemic species, and one of the best places on the island to observe rainforest-dwelling primates and birds.
Embark on a guided walk through Sinharaja’s dense green labyrinth. Your naturalist will lead you beneath a towering canopy alive with birdsong, butterflies, and rare endemic species. Spot Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys peering from the treetops, along with the shy Sri Lanka Blue Magpie flitting through the foliage. Every footstep unveils a hidden world of fungi, insects, and moss-laden trees that have thrived for centuries. This is a living museum of evolution. One of the richest ecosystems on Earth.
After days immersed in wild nature, make your way back toward the western coast, arriving at Jetwing Lagoon in Negombo. Designed by legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa, this tranquil resort sits between the Indian Ocean and a serene lagoon. Take time to unwind, perhaps with a traditional Ayurvedic therapy or a sunset stroll along the boardwalk. Let the serenity of the water and whispers of nature wrap up your journey in quiet reflection.
